Development is well underway on the next generation of Suzuki’s SX4 small car, as these recent spy photos reveal.

Spotted undergoing testing in Spain, these hatch prototypes look to maintain a similar overall profile to the current model.

This includes the current model’s plunging window line, although the existing front quarter windows have been eliminated, or at least reduced in size.

Beneath the camouflage, a grille clearly influenced by the more recent Swift and Kizashi designs is evident.

Current-generation SX4s have been available locally since early 2007 in sedan and hatch forms, with hatch models available in all-wheel-drive.

The current SX4 was co-developed with Fiat, which produces a Sedici-badged version currently sold across Europe.

Development is expected to be a Suzuki-exclusive affair this time around, with Fiat expected to replace the Sedici with a production version of the 500X small SUV concept teased recently.

SX4 production is likely to continue to be sourced from Japan, with the first models expected some time in 2013.
