Surprising no-one, Suzuki has confirmed this week that its recent S-Cross concept will launch as the next-generation SX4.

Revealed in production form at this week's Geneva Motor Show, the new SX4 is bigger than the model it replaces, and brings a decidedly less awkward style to the name.

Designed to a "think bigger" philosophy, the new SX4 measures 4310mm long, making it 160mm longer than the outgoing SX4, and 160mm shorter than the 5-door Grand Vitara. The wheelbase has also grown from 2500 to 2600mm.

This evolution ultimately means more interior space for passengers and greater luggage capacity, with rear storage allowance growing from 270 to 430 litres with the rear seats up.

International engine options will include two 1.6 litre units, one a petrol mill based on the current 1.6 litre M16A engine, and the other a 1.6 litre diesel.

The petrol engine will be offered with a five-speed manual transmission only, although Suzuki promises newly optimised gear ratios for better performance and fuel economy.
