Subaru Australia has rolled out a rugged styling upgrade for its jacked-up Outback SUV, some nine months on from the line-up's last major update.

The Outback gets a tougher look for the 2014 model year, with customer feedback leading the carmaker to highlight the wagon's off-road ability.

“We’ve had a lot of customer feedback suggesting owners would like a slightly tougher-looking Outback with greater body protection, which is especially useful on rural roads where this wagon rates highly," Subaru Australia boss Nick Senior said.

Now featured as part of the Outback's standard equipment list are new roofrails with cross bars, side sills and cladding, wheel-arch guards, front mud flaps, a dark grey finish to the grille and alloy wheels, and a blackened background to the headlights.

The Outback also gets a protection upgrade, with new underbody guards added to the front and rear.

And if all of these tweaks are a little too rugged for your tastes, you can stick to just roof rails, side sills, dark grey front grille and alloy wheels, and the headlights with black background.

The price of each Outback model has risen by $500 as part of the upgrade, although Subaru says the new features add more than $2500 in catalogue value.

The Outback range is otherwise unchanged, with features carrying over from the petrol and diesel updates launched in January.
