SsangYong’s updated Rexton SUV is now on sale in Australia. Unveiled in 2012, the new seven-seater joins the updated Korando small SUV that landed last month.

Its arrival gives SsangYong a freshened four-model range, with last year’s new Stavic people-mover and the Actyon ute that landed in 2012.

With this release, SsangYong distributor Ateco has pared-back the Rexton line-up from three models to just one, priced from $39,990 driveaway.

Standout updates to the Rexton include all-new modernised styling up front, with a longer and bolder grille design with large swept-back headlights and a new-look bumper.

Rear-end changes are dominated by re-styled lights and a new bumper.

Both ends of the car get LED driving lights, and exterior tweaks are rounded out by new mirror-mounted indicators and a new rear bumper.

In the cabin you’ll find a refreshed dash design with a new layout to the centre controls and vents, although the steering wheel is unchanged from the Rexton’s earlier incarnation.

Diesel Engine

Power in the updated Rexton is provided by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel, replacing the 2.7 litre five-cylinder unit in the previous model.

Power is down from 121 to 115kW, but torque is greater in the new engine, up from 440 to 460Nm.

Sending power to all four wheels through a Daimler-derived five-speed auto, the Rexton’s diesel lists fuel use at 7.8 l/100km.

The Rexton’s four-wheel-drive system features high and low ratios, and braked towing capacity is listed at 2600kg.

Standard features in the updated seven-seat Rexton include leather trim to the seats, steering wheel and shift knob, along with a climate control system that includes front and rear air-conditioning and independent controls in the third row.

There’s also a power adjustable driver’s seat with memory, steering-mounted gear shift buttons, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, 16-inch alloy wheels and a space saver spare, roof rails and side steps.

Safety features include driver and passenger front and side airbags, electronic stability control, anti-rollover protection, hill descent control, emergency brake assist, speed-sensitive door locks and Isofix child seat points.

The Rexton measures 4755mm long and 1900mm wide, and, for those heading into the wild for the weekend, there’s 250mm and 216mm of clearance at the front and rear respectively. There’s a 25.5 approach angle and a 22.5 departure angle.

The updated Rexton is available now, from $39,990 driveaway.
