smart’s tiny fortwo city car is set to adopt a different, larger shape when the third generation model launches in 2014.

A new report by UK mag Autocar suggests the growth will largely be driven by frontal impact protection targets, and will likely result in a more pronounced nose than the current model’s stubby face.

Interior space is also likely to improve, continuing the evolution of the model between the first (1998-2007) and current second-generations.

According to the report, the new fortwo will increase in overall length by 80mm to approximately 2750mm, with a 100mm increase in width to 1660mm.

An occasional single rear seat is also a possibility, using a similar layout to the Toyota iQ city car.

Despte this growth, the fortwo replacement is expected to maintain its unconventional rear-engined rear driven layout, enabling engineers to extract the maximum safety gain from the extended nose.

The sole combustion engine is set to be a 900cc petrol unit, replacing the current model’s 799cc turbodiesel and 999cc petrol options.

A third-iteration of smart’s ‘electric drive’ pure-electric drivetrain is also expected, with a 65kW Bosch electric motor and lithium-ion battery unit.
