Smart's long-overdue next-generation Fortwo city car will make its debut at next year's Frankfurt Motor Show, according to new reports out of Europe.
On the scene since 2007, the current second-generation benefited from a makeover this year, and an all-electric model has also joined the line-up.
The past year has seen the Daimler-owned brand reveal a number of new concepts however, and it is known that a new platform is in development as part of a new alliance with Renault.
All of this will result in an all-new model in the coming year, and according to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the big unveiling will occur at the biennial Frankfurt Motor Show next September.
The report adds that a new concept will debut at next month's Paris Motor Show, offering the best look yet at what we can expect to see next year.
For now, we can likely expect the new Fortwo to continue the new look established by last year's Forvision concept.
While the crinkled paper-look doors are unlikely to make the cut, the longer A-pillar, integrated grille and LED-ringed front and rear lights could easily feature on the new car.
Don't expect the (relatively) large all-plastic wheels to cross over, although the inevitable Brabus-enhanced model will undoubtedly roll on appropriately audacious hoops.
