2014 SKODA Rapid AUSTRALIA
The Skoda Rapid has finally arrived in Australia, with sharp entry-level pricing of $18,990 making the Rapid 77TSI the most affordable European small car currently on the market.
Built on an adaptation of the VW Polo's platform and assembled in the Czech Republic, the Rapid is offered in two model grades, Ambition and Elegance, and with two petrol engines - a 77kW 1.2 litre turbo, and a 90kW 1.4 litre turbo.
Only one bodystyle is on offer, with Skoda Australia opting for the five-door Spaceback body instead of the sedan-esque Rapid that's also sold in Europe (which has a sedan silhouette but utilises a full tailgate).
Kicking off the range is the Rapid Spaceback 77TSI, which is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.
Power for this model tops out at 77kW at 5000rpm, and peak torque of 175Nm is available between 1550-4100rpm.
It's not especially quick with a 0-100km/h time of 10.2 seconds, but its claimed average fuel consumption of 5.2 l/100km makes it one of the thriftier small cars out there.
The 90TSI sits at the top of the Rapid range, and, like the 77TSI, borrows its powerplant from the Yeti.
Outputs of 90kW and 200Nm give it a 0-100km/h sprint time of 9.4 seconds, and the 1.4 litre engine is paired with a seven-speed twin-clutch DSG automatic as standard.
Both models are front-wheel-drive and suspended on MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam rear. The base Ambition grade gets 16-inch alloys as standard, while the 90TSI Elegance sits on 17-inch wheels.
Features & Dimensions
The Rapid is offered in two model grades, the entry-level Ambition and up-spec Elegance.
As standard, the Ambition receives air-conditioning, cruise control, trip computer, Bluetooth audio/telephony and a USB audio input.
Upgrading to Elegance spec nabs you climate control, rain-sensing wipers, height adjustment for the passenger seat, dusk-sensing headlamps, front foglamps, reverse parking sensors and a smattering of metallic trim in the interior.
Both Ambition and Elegance are available with two option packages, with the Sports-pack adding xenon headlamps, alloy pedals, front sports seats with premium cloth upholstery, and, when added to the Ambition model, reverse parking-sensors plus foglamps.
The Style package goes further, replacing the Rapid's steel roof with an enormous panoramic glass sunroof and extending the hatch glass further down the tailgate.
The Style pack (below) also brings darkened tail lamps and front foglamps, black 17-inch alloys and privacy glass.
However, no Rapid models are available with satellite navigation or a reversing camera. Noteworthy exclusions, given both features are fast becoming standard on many small cars.
