Skoda's new small-but-medium 2014 Octavia range is now on sale in Australia, with official details released today (ahead of the press embargo) after the company's customer website inadvertently 'leaked' prices and model details.

The new Octavia, available in sedan and wagon form, kicks off with the $21,690 Ambition 103TSI manual sedan. Skoda has also confirmed a very appealing drive-away price of $22,990 for this model.

Today's launch also brings news of Skoda's capped-price servicing program, with the Octavia the first model to be covered. Read on for further details.

The debut of the new Octavia, first revealed nearly one year ago, comes as part of a styling and quality overhaul for the Volkswagen-owned Czech brand.

The new model draws on the looks of the smaller Rapid, wearing a no-nonsense suit of sharp lines and understated modern features.

Engine Options

" class="small img-responsive"/>
All three engines in the new Octavia range get turbocharging and direct injection.

Opening the new Octavia range is the 1.4 litre 103TSI engine, producing 103kW and 250Nm of torque.

Skoda lists fuel consumption at 5.7 l/100km with the six-speed manual transmission, and 5.2 l/100km with the seven-speed DSG automatic.

Although the smallest engine in the range, the 1.4 promises relatively quick acceleration, listed at 8.4 seconds for the 0-100km/h dash for the manual, and 8.5 seconds for the auto.

Next in the petrol line is the 132TSI, driven by a 132kW/250Nm 1.8 litre four-cylinder engine.

Available with a seven-speed DSG only, this engine lists fuel use at 5.9 l/100km, with a 0-100km/h time of 7.4 seconds.

Rounding out the range is the 110TDI, powered by the Volkswagen group's 110kW/320Nm 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel.

This unit is mated to a six-speed DSG and lists fuel use at a low 4.9 l/100km. The 0-100km/h time climbs back up to 8.6 seconds.

Suspension in the new Octavia range is by MacPherson struts up front, and a multi-link arrangement at the rear.

Features & Dimensions

Built on the same MQB platform that underpins the new Golf and Audi's new A3 range, the 2013 Octavia is larger all-round than its predecessor.

At 4659mm long and 1814mm wide, the small car has been stretched by 90 and 45mm respectively. The wheelbase is also longer, growing 108mm to 2686mm.

Inside, the Octavia gains 39mm in front elbow room, and 26mm in rear elbow room.

Rear storage is also among the greatest in the segment, listed at 568 litres in the sedan and 588 litres in the rear (an increase of eight litres for both).

With the 60:40 split-folding rear seats laid flat, storage grows to 1558 litres in the sedan (up 138 litres) and 1718 litres in the wagon (up 98 litres).

STANDARD FEATURES with the entry-level Ambition model include 16-inch steel wheels (with 16-inch steel spare), cloth seats, leather steering wheel/handbrake/gear-lever, daytime running lights and fog lights, four-speaker audio, and aux/USB/Bluetooth connectivity (phone and media). Seven airbags are also standard equipment.

An optional $1700 Travel Pack can also be had with the Ambition, adding 17-inch alloys, rear parking sensors, cruise control, front centre armrest with storage, and four more speakers.

Moving up to the mid-spec Ambition Plus adds 17-inch alloy wheels (with space-saver spare), cruise control, eight-speaker audio with 5.8 inch touchscreen, rear parking sensors, fatigue detection, rear side airbags, height-adjustable front seats with lumbar support and a front centre arm rest with storage.

The range tops out with the Elegance model, adding 18-inch alloys, leather seats and trim, eight-inch main display, satellite navigation, 64gb music storage, colour multi-function display in the instrument cluster, front parking sensors, powered mirrors, ambience lighting, tinted windows, auto headlights and fog lights with cornering function.

The Ambition Plus and Elegance models can also be upgraded further with the Tech Pack ($3900 and $3300 respectively), adding adaptive cruise control with front assist and city emergency brake, auto park assist, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and tail-lights, keyless entry and push-button start, drive-mode selector and 10-speaker audio.

The Tech Pack's drive mode selector offers four modes: Normal, Eco, Sport and Individual, adjusting engine, transmission, steering, climate control, coasting function and headlights settings.

Capped-Price Service

Skoda has also introduced a new Capped Price Servicing program, covering a vehicle's first six services at 12 months or 15,000km (whichever comes first) for up to six years/90,000km.

Pricing across the first six services for the 103TSI total out to $2044. The cost grows to $2387 over the six services for the 132TSI, and the 110TDI is most expensive at $2464.

Excluded from the capped-price program is replacement for the $173 pollen filter and for brake fluid - the latter requiring replacement every 24 months.
