Renault’s facelifted and updated Megane range is now on sale in Australia, following its European debut late last year.

Available again in hatch and wagon form, the 2014 Megane benefits from a re-styled face, a small new petrol engine and a new auto option at the entry.

The revised line-up also sees the entry model changed from Expression to Authentique, while the Privilege model’s deletion makes the GT-Line Premium the top dog for 2014.

Prices have increased for the new model year by up to $1000, but, importantly, the point of entry remains unchanged at $20,990 for the Dynamique model.

Styling changes see the Megane pick up the brand’s new family face, rounding off the inside corner of the existing headlights - now connected through Renault's familiar new grille design.

There's also new bumper designs across the range, varying in look depending on the model.

The local Megane range was last updated in July last year, when the wagon model and the new 1.2 litre turbocharged and direct-injected petrol engine appeared.

That compact engine is now the only petrol option in the regular Megane range, delivering 97kW at 5500rpm and 205Nm from 2000rpm.

The new unit’s 97kW is a shade lower than the old 2.0 engine’s 103kW, but with 205Nm of torque over a wider rev range, the 1.2 is more tractable than the 195Nm 2.0 engine.

The 1.2 engine’s rise to prominence means that a six-speed dual-clutch auto can now be had with the new unit, joining the existing six-speed manual.

Both manual and auto versions of the 1.2 claim a 5.6 l/100km fuel consumption figure, but only the manual gets a stop-start system.

Elsewhere in the range is the carry-over 1.5 litre turbodiesel, offering 81kW and 240Nm. The diesel is available with a dual-clutch auto only, and fuel use is listed at 4.5 l/100km.

Standard features with the entry Authentique model includes 16-inch steel wheels, cloth trim, manual air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone/audio integration, power windows and mirrors, and foglamps.

Stepping up to the mid-range GT-Line adds 16-inch alloys, leather steering wheel, more bolstering to the front seats, auto-on wipers and headlamps, front and rear parking sensors, sat-nav, a touchscreen display, and dual-zone climate control.

In the top GT-Line Premium you’ll find 17-inch alloys, a two-panel glass sunroof, heated front seats, two-tone leather upholstery, a reversing camera and Renault’s Visio safety system, which adds lane departure warning and auto high-beam.

Safety features across the range include stability control, traction control, ABS, EBD, brake assist, six airbags (dual front, front side, full-length curtain), ISOFIX child seat anchorages, pretensioning front seatbelts.
