Mitsubishi has announced the arrival of its 2014 ASX line-up, which sees improvements to fuel economy, standard equipment and some modest price drops.

The range structure remains largely the same, with the ASX available in two model grades (base ASX and ASX Aspire) and two engine choices - one petrol, one diesel. The Aspire petrol manual has been dropped however.

The price of entry is now $1000 less for the base model ASX petrol 2WD manual (now $24,990), and the ASX petrol 2WD CVT has had its price slashed by $1250.

The ASX Aspire petrol 4WD sees the biggest price drop, falling $1500 to rest at $33,490. However the 2WD variant of the Aspire Petrol rises $250 to sit at $31,490.

Prices for the diesel-engined ASXs remain the same, with the ASX DiD auto retailing for $31,990 and the ASX Aspire DiD auto priced at $36,490.

Mechanical

While the auto-only 110kW/360Nm 2.2 diesel is unchanged from when it was first introduced earlier this year, the 2.0 litre petrol has been finessed to improve fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

It still produces 110kW of power and 197Nm of torque, but consumes just 7.6 l/100km in manual 2WD trim.

That's only 0.1 l/100km better than the outgoing model, but the gains are more noticable with the CVT 2WD and CVT 4WD models, both of which consume 0.2 l/100km less fuel than before (7.7 and 7.9 l/100km respectively).

The 2.2 litre diesel powerplant is available only with a six-speed automatic and 4WD, and carries over unchanged. Peak power is 110kw and peak torque is a healthy 360Nm, and average fuel economy is a claimed 5.8 l/100km.

Subtle changes to suspension bushings see a mild improvement to ride comfort for all models, and extra sound-suppressing materials improve refinement.

Features

All ASX models now get reversing sensors as well as a reversing camera as standard. Cruise control, climate control, Bluetooth, auto-folding wing mirrors and leather-wrapped steering wheels and gear shifters are also standard for all ASXs.

The base ASX now sports 17-inch alloys as standard, up from the 16-inch wheels of the MY13 model. The audio headunit has also been updated, and features full Bluetooth audio/telephone conncectivity, a USB audio input, iPod compatibility and a 6.1-inch colour touchscreen display.

Rear seat comfort has also been given a boost with new seat cushion shaping.

The ASX Aspire's spec sheet is pretty much the same as before.

Leather upholstery, a panoramic glass sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, rain-sensing wipers, dusk sensing headlamps, satellite navigation, a powered driver's seat and heated front seats are just some of the niceties enjoyed by the Aspire.
