Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to scalding-hot SUVs (take the ML 63 AMG, GL 63 AMG, G 65 AMG or the truly bonkers G 63 AMG 6x6 for example), so it was no surprise to see these photos of an AMG-fied GLA show up in our inbox.

Like the regular GLA small SUV, the GLA 45 AMG will borrow heavily from its A-Class cousin, the A 45 AMG.

Besides its floorpan, the GLA 45's turbocharged 2.0 litre engine, AWD drivetrain, seven-speed twin clutch automatic and brake package is expected to be shared with the A45 AMG (and by extension, the CLA 45 AMG).

With the A 45 AMG's engine capable of 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque, it should serve the GLA 45 AMG well. Larger brakes, a buttoned-down suspension tune and a unique steering calibration are also expected.

The larger GLA 45 should be slightly slower than the A 45 and CLA 45 as a result of its heavier kerb weight, but with an expected 0-100km/h sprint time of around 5.0 seconds it definitely won't be a slouch.

Externally, the GLA 45 will sport the typical AMG flourishes of an aggressive front and rear fascia, deeper side skirts, larger wheels (to fit around those bigger brakes) and a quad-tipped exhaust system.

The GLA 45 AMG will make its global debut either late this year or early in 2014, with a local arrival expected sometime in the second half of 2014.
