Mercedes-Benz has revealed today that its pocket-rocket A 45 AMG hatch will hit Australia at $74,900 - close to the "around $80,000" figure confirmed by TMR earlier this year.
Due in Australia from September, the A 45 AMG will debut $6500 above BMW's M135i hot hatch. But, where that 'Bimmer' is not a true M model, the A 45 has had every bit of AMG's know-how poured into it.
The Merc is also a good deal more powerful than its BMW counterpart, with its 2.0 litre turbo four delivering 265kW to the M135i's 235kW turbo six - although both offer 450Nm of torque.
The difference is enough to make the Merc a few hairs quicker to 100km/h, listing a 4.6 second sprint against the BMW's 4.9 second best.
Importantly, the starting price of the M135i sees it equipped with a manual transmission, whereas the Merc can be had only with a dual-clutch auto. Select that option in the BMW, and the price difference becomes $2500.
Shopping within the Merc range alone, the coming debut of the A 45 will give buyers a much more affordable path into the AMG range, with the larger C 63 AMG starting at a hefty $152,800 in sedan form.
