Mazda's big CX-9 SUV has been given a light but crucial update for the 2014 model year, with the top model gaining a key new safety feature.

Now standard with the CX-9 Grand Touring AWD, Mazda's Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system sounds a warning and an LED icon appears on both side mirrors when the radar detects oncoming traffic from either side of the reversing car.

The system comes to the CX-9 from the new Mazda6 range, and joins a number of other advanced features in the Grand Touring that include Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Obstruction Warning and High Beam Control.

All models in the CX-9 range have also picked up updated wheels, with the 20-inch hoops of the Luxury and Grand Touring models getting a new design, while the 18-inch wheels of the Classic have been given a new silver finish.

Two new colours have also been added to the range: Jet Black mica and Blue Reflex mica.

This latest update follows the launch of the facelifted CX-9 range in December last year.

Pricing remains unchanged for the 2014 model year.
