2014 ISUZU MUX AUSTRALIA
Its coming may have been one of this year's worst-kept secrets, but Isuzu's new MU-X SUV is at last out in the open, and officially.
The new Isuzu shares only its bonnet and front doors with the Colorado 7. Styling front and rear is heavily revised, there is a dominant rising crease running through to the tail-lights, bolder guards and, below, a completely new five-link rear-end layout.
Unveiling the MU-X today in Thailand, Isuzu has also confirmed Australian details and pricing: the range is set to kick off at $40,500. But those getting in early may be pleasantly surprised.
Speaking with TMR today, Isuzu Ute Australia's Dave Harding confirmed the MU-X will be offered with "very special" drive-away pricing to win buyers.
The MU-X is powered by the same 3.0 litre HiPower diesel engine that drives the D-Max pickup, producing 130kW and 380Nm of torque - the latter between 1800 and 2800rpm.
It's a proven understressed unit with stainless steel timing-chain and a very wide, flat torque curve for lazy driving.
Depending on the model, the MU-X can be had with either a five-speed manual or Aisin five-speed auto.
Combined-cycle fuel consumption for the 3.0 litre turbodiesel is rated at 8.2 l/100km for the 4x2 automatic models, and 8.4 l/100km for the 4x4 models in both manual and automatic form.
Isuzu's new SUV is built on a full-length ladder chassis architecture, with an independent double wishbone and coil spring setup at the front, and a five-link arrangement at the rear.
Models equipped with 4x4 get an intelligent Traction Control system with Electronic Stability Control, and also benefit from 230mm ground clearance with 30.1 degree approach and 25.1 departure angles.
The MU-X also gets the D-Max's Terrain Command 4WD select dial, allowing the driver to adjust between two-and four-wheel drive modes while travelling at speeds of up to 100km/h. Auto versions are fitted with hill-ascent and descent control.
Braked towing capacity is rated at 3000kg across all models, and unbraked is rated at 750kg. Maximum down-ball load is rated at 300kg.
Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, colour-coded mirrors and gunmetal grey grille, along with six-speaker audio with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity.
The mid-spec LS-U adds 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, chrome grille and mirrors, and aluminium side steps.
In top-spec LS-T form, there's satellite navigation with live traffic updates, and a 10-inch DVD display for rear passengers, along with leather-accented trim and climate control air-conditioning.
Safety features for all models includes ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist and four-wheel disc brakes (300mm ventilated front with twin-piston caliper, 318mm solid rear with single piston).
There are six airbags on-board in all models, including dual front, curtain and side airbags. All Isuzu MU-X models are fitted with Rear Park Assist; the up-spec LS-T also gets a reversing camera.
