As part of a new powertrain sourcing deal between Nissan and Daimler, Infiniti's next generation G mid-sizer will reportedly be powered by a range of turbocharged Mercedes-Benz designed four-cylinder engines when it hits the market in late 2013.

Although precise specifications are not know, it's expected that the new G's engines will be broadly similar to the 1.8 litre direct-injected petrol and 2.2 liter turbodiesel powerplants found in the current Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

With the current G only available with either a 3.7 litre naturally aspirated petrol V6 or a 3.0 litre turbodiesel V6, the addition of cheaper, more fuel efficient small-capacity engines is expected to significantly improve the G's showroom appeal.

It will also give the Japanese luxury brand a true competior to cars like the BMW 320i and Audi A4 1.8 TFSI.

It's been speculated that the 2014 Infiniti G range would be built around the new C-Class' architecture, albeit with a slightly stretched wheelbase. However official confirmation of the new G's architecture has not been announced, and it's unclear whether Infiniti will utilse the C-Class's floorpan or continue to use the versatlie Nissan-developed Front Midship platform for its luxury midsizer.

Although it seems like the next G could be more Mercedes than Infiniti, performance car fans will be pleased to hear that Nissan is rumoured to be working on a twin-turbo 3.7 litre V6 for its premium offshoot.

With an expected power output of over 400kW, this engine is expected to find its way into an Infiniti-badged rival to the BMW M3 and Lexus IS F, although the development of such a car has yet to be officially acknowledged.

Infiniti Small Car On Its Way

Infiniti has confirmed that it will launch an all-new small car in 2014, to compete directly with the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

To be built on the same MFA platform that lies beneath the new A-Class and B-Class, Infiniti's new compact car will be front-wheel drive and will likely use a range of Benz-sourced four-cylinder and six-cylinder powertrains.

It will also be built in Austria by Magna Steyr, and although production numbers are still secret, industry insiders say Steyr's facility could pump out as many as 60,000 cars per year for Infiniti.

Body styling will draw inspiration from the Infiniti Etherea concept (above), and Infiniti hopes its as-yet-unnamed small car will help the fledgling brand broaden its customer base

"This new vehicle represents a significant opportunity for the Infiniti brand to reach new consumers and grow in key markets such as Western Europe," said Andy Palmer, Nissan Motor Company executive vice president and Infiniti's global head.
