Honda's new MDX SUV, shown here with the Acura face it will wear in North America, has debuted at the Detroit Auto Show this week.
Although strictly a concept, little about this big new SUV is likely to change before it enters production in the next year. But will we see it in Australia?
The current MDX, not available in Australia, was introduced in 2006, receiving a facelift in 2010. Australia saw only the first-generation model, launched here in 2003 for the princely sum of $69,990.
While a local return for the near-premium MDX will depend on pricing and position, Honda's Australian arm will be keen to get a slice of a Large SUV segment that is now over 100,000 sales year-to-date.
If sales of the Legend - which landed with a premium price tag but not a premium badge - are anything to go by, a Honda version of the new MDX would need to skimp on the luxury appointments.
"[The new MDX] will further improve the already great functionality in the cabin and cargo area while really amping up luxury, comfort and quiet," Acura's Jon Ikeda said in Detroit.
"And that's really the focus of this new MDX, delivering outstanding luxury performance and family capability in a more refined and alluring package."
