Honda's new diesel-powered CR-V DTi-S and DTi-L models have touched down in Australia this week, joining the existing line of petrol-powered options.

The new trio, which kicks off from $38,290, debuts as Honda Australia's second diesel range, following the launch early last year of the diesel Civic hatch.

But while the diesel Civic is driven by a 88kW/300Nm 1.6 litre engine, the 2014 diesel CR-V gets Honda's larger and more powerful 2.2 litre engine.

Mechanical Package

Both models in the diesel CR-V range are powered by a turbocharged all-aluminium 2.2 litre four-cylinder engine, producing 110kW at 4000rpm and 350Nm between 2000 and 2750rpm.

Six-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmissions are available with the entry DTi-S, while the DTi-L is offered exclusively with the five-speed auto.

Fuel consumption is rated at 5.8 and 6.7 l/100km for the DTi-S manual and auto respectively, and 6.9 l/100km for the DTi-L auto.

Both models are also matched to Honda's electronically-controlled 'RealTime' four-wheel-drive system.

Suspension is by MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, while braking is managed by 296mm ventilated discs at the front and 305mm solid discs out back.

Towing capacity for the manual model is rated at 2000kg braked and 600kg unbraked, while the auto lists 1500kg and 600kg respectively. Maximum down-ball force is rated at 100kg.

Standard features in the DTi-S include 17-inch alloy wheels, auto wipers and headlights (halogen), LED daytime running lights and tail-lights, cloth seats, leather steering wheel, cruise control, steering-mounted controls, satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone/audio, USB/iPod connectivity, dual-zone climate control, manual seat adjustment and auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Upgrading to the DTi-L model adds 18-inch alloys, smart entry with pushbutton start, HID bi-xenon headlights and active cornering lights, leather trim, heated front seats, eight-way powered driver's seat with memory settings, ambient door lighting and roof rails.

Standard safety features include front/side/curtain airbags, vehicle stability control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, trailer stability assist, rear parking sensors, reversing camera and - in auto models - hill-start assist. The DTi-L adds front parking sensors.

The CR-V range carries a top 5-Star ANCAP crash safety rating.

Rear storage is listed at 556 litres with the rear seats upright, expanding to 1120 litres with the seats flat and the space loaded to the window line. To-the-roof load area is listed at 1648 litres.
