Holden's Barina range has a new hero model, with the turbocharged RS hatch now on sale in Australia from $20,990.

Announced in September, the Barina RS is based on the Chevrolet Sonic RS that hit overseas markets in 2012. Here, it replaces the popular SRi model of earlier generations.

As expected, the Barina RS is motivated by the same 103kW/200Nm 1.4 litre turbo engine available with the larger Cruze, matched to a six-speed manual transmission.

With those numbers, the RS won't be battling Ford's Fiesta ST for supremacy in the 'light hot hatch' market - but with a $5000 price advantage, it's bound to find a few driveways.

Importantly, the RS is also available with a six-speed automatic transmission, which boosts price to $23,190.

The addition of the auto will be welcomed by buyers in this segment looking for a warm sporty hatch, and a commuter vehicle, but not interested in a 'stick shift'.

The RS also benefits from a sports suspension tune, a 10mm lower ride height and extra body-bracing for greater rigidity.

Holden says the the electric power steering has also been locally retuned, with a quicker ratio of 2.3 turns lock-to-lock and unique calibration.

Standard features with the RS include 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 205/50R17 tyres, a 'Premium' sports interior with leather RS-branded seats (heated up front), sports pedals and RS floor mats, piano black highlights, leather steering wheel and shifter knob.

There's also front fog lights, chrome exterior highlights and - of course - RS badging.

There's also Holden's seven-inch MyLink display, a storage tray under the front passenger seat, a sunglasses holder, and a trip computer.

A tyre inflator kit comes with the RS, but buyers can also opt for a no-cost 15x6-inch full-size steel spare wheel.

Safety features include six airbags, reverse parking sensors, electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, pedal release system, seatbelt pretensioners and rear seat child seat anchor points.

The Barina RS also gets capped price servicing up to four standard scheduled services for the first three years or 60,000kms, whichever comes first.
