UPDATED: New images added to gallery


If you've been playing Mustang Bingo in the lead-up to the new model's unveiling (what's wrong with you?), you can now circle the box marked "inevitable press leak one day before the unveiling".

With only one box left on your card - "finally, at last, it's official" - we can now show you Ford's all-new retro-futurised 2014 Mustang coupe.

Shown here on the cover of US magazine AutoWeek, low-quality images of the new pony car appeared overnight on enthusiast sites SVT Performance Forum and Mustang6G.com before flooding the American media.

If you've been following the Mustang news over the past year, little about these official images will surprise you.

With a regular flow of revealing spy photos, leaked development renderings and (now clearly) accurate renderings, the new model's look has been known for sometime.

The key change to the Mustang's iconic look is the new long, slender and aggressive headlights, replacing the large round headlights of the past two generations.

This new Mustang isn't the first generation to experiment with different headlight shapes, but it is certainly the biggest change to the coupe's look since it was reborn in 2005.

Set between the new headlights is a recognisable grille shape, reshaped into a six-point design but leaving little doubt that it belongs.

The 2014 Mustang's profile does away with the iconic B-pillar (expect to see coloured vinyl wraps applied there), creating a unified glasshouse beneath a new shortened roofline.

The rear-end is dominated by a new fan-like take on the Mustang's classic tail-lights, flanking the legendary pony badge.

Elsewhere, the Mustang is familiar fare made a little more sleek and a little more muscular than the model it replaces.


We've seen all this; what's underneath?

Technical details for the new Mustang have yet to surface - the images shown here are not clear enough to read - although one section describes a 90kg weight saving over the old model.

More will come with Thursday night's official unveiling (we'll be there), but it is believed Ford will not reveal many specifications until closer to the car's market launch next year.

For the international market we can expect a range of turbo four-cylinder, V6 and V8 engine options and a circa US$20,000 starting point.

A leaked Ford customer survey last month highlighted a 224kW/394Nm 3.8 litre V6 engine, along with a 231kW/421Nm 2.4 litre turbo four.

In Australia, the range will likely feature V6 and V8 options only, and a price tag closer to $40-50,000.
