Ford Australia has today confirmed a number of key details for its new Mondeo range - but buyers won't be able to get into one for another year.

Unveiled way back in January 2012, the new Mondeo was expected to hit Australia this year, but last-minute homologation and specification changes saw European and Australian production delayed.

When the new Mondeo finally lands here in the second half of next year, buyers will have the choice of 1.5 and 2.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engines, along with a 2.0 litre Duratorq diesel option.

The 1.5 litre engine is the newest addition to the EcoBoost family, and Ford says it will offer around 133kW and 240Nm - or about the same as the 1.6 litre engine current available, but with better fuel and emissions figures.

In its current guise, the Mondeo's familiar 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine produces 177kW and 340Nm.

The Mondeo hatch and wagon's arrival will also mark a first for Ford in Australia, debuting inflatable seatbelts in the rear row.

The new technology is designed to disperse crash forces across the passenger's body, covering an area five times greater than that achieved by a regular seatbelt.

And, like all new Ford models, the Mondeo will also debut with Ford's SYNC system, offering a range of connectivity and voice-control functions.

In Australia, the Mondeo will square off against the likes of Holden's new Malibu, the Honda Accord, the Mazda6 and the Hyundai i40.

And, unless a 'full-size' replacement for the outgoing Falcon is confirmed, we could also see the Mondeo become Ford's largest sub-SUV passenger offering.
