Ford’s Focus small car is on the sales warpath, adding a host of new standard features this week while leaving range-wide pricing untouched.

Working to reclaim market share from the popular Corolla, Mazda3, i30 and Golf, this latest Focus update follows the addition of key features late last year.

Headlining the changes is Emergency Assistance, now standard across the range after debuting with the top-shelf Focus ST in mid-2013 (and later the Fiesta range).

Other enhancements include the addition of rear parking sensors to the entry Ambiente model, while the next-step-up Trend adds dual-zone climate control.

Also standard now with the Trend is the Convenience Pack, which adds automatic wipers and headlights, ‘follow me home’ lighting and an auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror.

Ford’s KeyFree system and Power Start Button are now standard with the Sport model, and the top-shelf Titanium picks up a powered sunroof as standard.

With the sunroof previously part of the Sports Executive Pack - which also adds HID headlights, Active City Stop and Adaptive Cruise Control - that pack drops in price from $2300 to $1200.

The range is otherwise unchanged for 2014.

To the end of May (June figures due this week), Ford had notched up 7218 year-to-date sales in Australia, led closely by Holden’s Cruze with 7261 sales.

The top-end of the small-car segment remains a tightly-fought race between the Mazda3 (18,465 sales year-to-date end of May) and the Corolla (17,518), with Hyundai’s i30 in a distant third on 12,449 sales and the Volkswagen Golf fourth on 8263 sales.

Ford will be looking to these latest updates to push the Focus toward fourth place, but a push into the top three may be out of reach.

A newly facelifted Focus range has appeared on the international scene this year however, and its Australian debut in 2015 could bring a change in the small car’s fortunes.
