The latest iteration of Fiat's Panda light car has debuted at Geneva in the form of the 2014 Panda Cross, a jacked-up, body-armoured version of the Panda 4x4 that's pitched at devotees of the great outdoors.

It comes with 160mm of ground clearance and chunkier tyres mounted on 15-inch alloys.

The AWD system is the same as that employed by the Panda 4x4, with an electronic clutch taking power to the rear axle only when slip is detected up front.

An AWD lock mode can direct drive to all four wheels if the driver feels they need more grip, but only at speeds of up to 48km/h.

And how capable is it in those great outdoors? Fiat says the Panda Cross can crawl up a 24-degree incline without breaking a sweat.

The Panda Cross can be had with Fiat's 0.9 litre 66kW/145Nm TwinAir engine or the 1.3 litre 59kW/190Nm Multiair II turbo diesel. Transmission choice is limited to a six-speed manual for both engines.

Outside, the Panda Cross differentiates itself from the rest of the Panda family by its chunky plastic cladding over the wheel arches, headlight surrounds and lower doors.

The front and rear bumpers are also unique to the Cross, coming with big silver-painted pseudo-bashplates.
