The 2014 Cadillac Escalade won’t be heading to Australia anytime soon, but the big SUV has been the star in the US media circus today.
Cadillac promised earlier this year that the all-new Escalade would be “much less ostentatious”, but that hasn’t stopped the American carmaker giving the SUV bold new front styling, including vertical LED lighting.
The exterior also features restyled doors to help reduce wind noise, active air-shutters which close in front of the radiator to improve aerodynamics and efficiency along with standard 20-inch wheels (22-inch optional). The large SUV will be available in both standard and long-wheel-base form.
Power comes from GM's 6.2 litre V8 petrol engine, producing 313kW and 623Nm and featuring direct injection, Active Fuel Management cylinder-deactivation (familiar to V8 Holden Commodore owners) and continuously variable valve timing.
A six-speed automatic is the only transmission option, and the Escalade is available in both two- and four-wheel-drive.
The interior features plenty of luxurious touches, including real wood trim, suede, ambient lighting and triple-sealed doors. There’s also additional head and leg room compared with the previous model.
A 12-inch all-digital display serves as the instrument cluster, while an eight-inch touch-screen dash display offers ‘smartphone-like’ tapping and swiping, satellite navigation and Bluetooth.
Safety features include numerous airbags, blind-spot alert and rear cross traffic alert, while a Driver Awareness Package and a Driver Assist Package are optional, adding such features as front and rear automatic braking and lane departure warning.
"Cadillac's growth provides the ideal stage for the all-new Escalade to take a major leap forward," Cadillac’s Bob Ferguson said.
"The 2014 Escalade is completely new and elevated in design and technology, inside and out. The clear objective is to once again assume the leadership position among luxury SUVs."
The 2014 Cadillac Escalade will begin production in 2014, with pricing yet to be confirmed.
