BMW's second-generation X5 is nearing the end of the road. New spy photos this week reveal that testing of its successor is well under way.

Expected to make its global debut toward the end of next year, the new X5 will continue the general theme of the current model, while adopting an evolution of the styling language delivered with the new X3 midsizer.

The trademark BMW swirled camouflage hides most of the details, but it is clear that this new X5 will feature the wider new kidney grille, with headlights linking directly to its sides.

Underneath, the 2014 X5 will likely utilise a version of the same versatile platform that underpins the new "F10" 5 Series large sedan, with a greater use of aluminium expected to bring the big SUV's weight down by around 150-200kg.

Although too early to say for certain, it is likely that the new X5 will be offered with a range of six-cylinder engine options, in petrol and diesel form, along with a new ActiveHybrid variant and the top-shelf V8-powered X5 M.
