We already know what the 2014 BMW X5 looks like, and the top diesel-powered M50d has also debuted - but the carmaker has shared little about the coming X5 M hero.

BMW has yet to make an announcement, but thanks to our eagle-eyed spy photographers, we've now got an inkling of what the 2014 BMW X5 M will look like.

If these photos are anything to go by, it will follow the same formula used by the current model.

With deeper front air dams, a restyled rear bumper and sideskirts, quad exhaust pipes, a lower ride height, big alloy wheels and swollen wheelarches, the 2014 BMW X5 M will not be lacking for visual aggression.

Thanks to the weight savings in the new X5's F-series platform (derived from F10 platform that underpins the 5 Series), it should also be markedly lighter too - something that will benefit both performance and fuel efficiency.

The outgoing X5 M's twin-turbo 4.4 litre V8 is expected to carry over with minimal changes.

But, with 414kW and 685Nm, it's certainly not lacking grunt. And if coupled with a lighter body, the new X5 M would most definitely be a much faster beast.

With the X5 M still in the final stages of development, its local arrival is likely to occur toward the third quarter or end of 2014.
