2014 BMW X4
BMW's new X4 coupe-crossover has been spied testing again this week, following its unveiling in concept form at this year's Shanghai Auto Show.
And, as with the 6 Series Gran Coupe and the new 4 Series Coupe, it is likely the X4 will enter production with only minor changes beyond the styling of its concept forebear.
The new model's coming has been known for some time, from reports back in 2010 through to official confirmation early last year.
The design of the X4 will merge BMW's latest styling language with the coupe-like roofline of the larger X6, offering buyers a style-focused alternative to the midsized X3 SUV.
The X4 will be marketed as a "Sports Activity Coupe", just like the X6 - but it will be a good deal smaller, riding on the same platform as the midsized X3.
At the front end, X4 features the same connected grille-to-headlights design worn across the new 3 and 4 Series model lines, while a strong X6-inspired bumper dominates the lower half of the face.
The profile of the X4 debuts strong new character lines, below a roofline that is even more coupe-inspired than the big X6. The whole package sits on large 21-inch alloy wheels.
The rear shows off tail-lights and a bumper heavily inspired by the 4 Series Coupe, tying the two badges together.
BMW confirmed last year that the X4 will share its platform and powertrain options with the X3. Its rivals will include the Evoque, Audi's reported Q4 and, in top trim grades, Porsche's coming Macan.
As with the X6, an X4 line-up could conceivably include an M Performance version, powered by the turbocharged six that drives the new 2 Series M235i coupe and 135i hatch.
