BMW's new M3 sedan has been spied testing once more, this time with less camouflage, ahead of an unveiling expected to occur at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.

And, while that means we still have a couple of months to go, it's no challenge to guess at the flagship sedan's final production styling.

Here we can see a wide-open three-port bumper, pumped guards, a quad-tip exhaust setup and the familiar 'power bulge' in the bonnet.

Details of the new M3's mechanics are still to be announced, although it is believed that a turbocharged straight-six will replace the V8 of the current model.

Power in the new M isn't expected to stray far from the 309kW of the current model, but with new lightweight construction to back it up, performance improvements should prove impressive enough.

Reports suggest the new M3 will be around 120kg lighter than its predecessor, benefiting from features both familiar and new: high-tensile strength steel, a carbon-fibre roof and plastic body elements.

We can also expect the 2014 M3 to feature traditional hydraulic steering, rather than the electronic setup that features in the regular 3 Series range.

The next M3 will be offered in sedan form only, with the outgoing coupe destined to be replaced by the new M4 badge. Both the sedan and coupe M models have been spied testing regularly in recent months.

As for the regular 4 Series Coupe, that was unveiled recently and will be in Australia later this year.
