BMW's next-generation M3 Coupe - or M4 Coupe, if earlier reports are to be believed - has been spied testing in Europe this week.

Whatever its name, the German carmaker's new performer is expected to get its own unique styling that goes beyond mere bumpers, including new lights and a new grille.

As with the new 3 Series sedan, the new coupe looks likely to steer clear of any revolutionary styling changes in its profile, following a theme similar to the current model.

Differences between the M3 Sedan and this new coupe will reportedly go beyond bodystyle and badges however, with the M4 expected to be the more hardcore, performance-focused half of the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe pair.

The 2013 model is also expected to drop two cylinders, swapping V8 power for a turbocharged inline six-cylinder mill, producing around 335kW of power.

Reports overseas suggest the engine will displace 3.3 litres, while picking up extra oomph from a pair of turbochargers. Some reports have also pointed to a triple-turbo arrangement.

According to Britain's Auto Express magazine, the new setup will see one turbo driven electrically, providing a low level of boost without relying on engine speed.

Watch for the new Coupe's unveiling to follow the launch next year of the all-new M3 sedan.
