Audi's new S3 hot hatch range has been rounded out this week with the international debut of the five-door Sportback bodystyle.
The Sportback's unveiling follows the unveiling in September of the three-door S3, but it's the five-door model that will launch in Australia later this year.
As with the regular A3 Sportback, the five-door S3 is longer than its three-door sibling, with a wheelbase stretched by 35mm for increaesed interior space.
Power in both S3 models is provided by Audi's 2.0 litre TFSI four-cylinder engine, delivering 221kW and 380Nm of torque - a significant leap beyond the 195kW/350Nm of the older model.
The turbo mill is mated to a choice of six-speed manual or S tronic automatic transmissions, and Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system also stars here.
Audi promises a 0-100km/h time of 5.6 seconds for the manual-equipped S3 Sportback, and a much sharper 5.0 seconds when fitted with the S tronic dual-clutch auto.
Despite the power boost, the combination of new engine technology and a 70kg lighter kerb weight gives the S3 Sportback a fuel consumption figure of 6.9 l/100km, bettering the old model by around 1.5 l/100km.
The new S3's chassis has also come in for the usual tweaks, gaining 25mm-lower sports suspension, bigger brakes and the option of electromagnetic damper control.
On the styling front, there's a new S-specific grille, along with new bumpers and skirts and big new 18-inch wheels wrapped in 225/40 rubber.
In the cabin, there's Audi's flat-bottomed steering wheel, satin brushed aluminium highlights, sports seats - with optional diamond quilting - and S badging throughout.
The regular 2013 A3 Sportback range will go on sale in Australia from May, with the S3 Sportback likely to follow later in the year.
