Audi's new RS 6 Avant has made its online debut today - and this time it's official, arriving on the tail of official images that surfaced earlier in the day.

Revealed ahead of its mid-2013 market launch in Europe, the RS 6 Avant will go on sale in Australia late next year as a 2014 model.

The online unveiling of the big performance wagon also brings confirmation of its new heart, dropping its predecessor's big V10 and returning to the V8 formula of the first-generation RS 6.

Where the previous model packed a 426kW bi-turbo 5.0 litre V10 (and the first a 331kW V8), the 2014 RS 6 is driven by the company's new twin-turbo 4.0 litre TFSI V8.

Developing 412kW and 700Nm of torque, the engine matches BMW's 4.4 litre V8 M5 for power, while offering 20 more of Newton's finest.

Peak power arrives between 5700 an 6700rpm, while maximum twist is available btween 1750 and 5500rpm.

Matched with all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed auto, Audi promises the potent V8 will push the big wagon to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds - again bettering the 4.3-second M5.

As for top speed, why that's a mere 305km/h.
