Audi's new RS 6 Avant has made its online debut today - and this time it's official, arriving on the tail of official images that surfaced earlier in the day.

Revealed ahead of its mid-2013 market launch in Europe, the RS 6 Avant will go on sale in Australia late next year as a 2014 model.

The online unveiling of the big performance wagon also brings confirmation of its new heart, dropping its predecessor's big V10 and returning to the V8 formula of the first-generation RS 6.

Where the previous model packed a 426kW bi-turbo 5.0 litre V10 (and the first a 331kW V8), the 2014 RS 6 is driven by the company's new twin-turbo 4.0 litre TFSI V8.

Developing 412kW and 700Nm of torque, the engine matches BMW's 4.4 litre V8 M5 for power, while offering 20 more of Newton's finest.

Peak power arrives between 5700 an 6700rpm, while maximum twist is available btween 1750 and 5500rpm.

Matched with all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed auto, Audi promises the potent V8 will push the big wagon to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds - again bettering the 4.3-second M5.

As for top speed, why that's a mere 305km/h.

The V8 engine also offers Cylinder On Demand, meaning that at low to intermediate engine load and speeds, the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders two, three, five and eight are shut down.

When the driver again demands power, the cylinders are reactivated in "a few hundredths of a second".

Other features include air suspension that lowers the car by 20mm, although Sports Suspension Plus with Dynamic Ride Control is offered as an alternative option.

Handling is also enhanced through a liberal use of aluminium - 20 percent of the body's construction - along with high-strength steel.

In all, the new RS 6 is around 100kg lighter than its predecessor.

Braking is managed by 390mm discs and six-piston calipers at the front, but 420mm fibre-ceramic discs are also available.

In the cabin, the RS 6 Avant features sports seats with quilted trim, while the rear row is fitted with two seats as standard - but a three-seat bench option will also be offered.

Standard features include Xenon Plus headlights, LED rear lights, a tire-pressure control system, illuminated entry sills and the custom driver-information system.

Also on board are the parking system plus, cruise control, three-zone automatic air conditioning, MMI navigation plus with MMI touch and the 10-speaker Audi sound system.

A new feature in the RS menu of the DIS is the shift light. Green segments are illuminated as revs increase, turning red and blinking when revs approach the red line.

On the styling front, the RS 6 Avant continues the styling evolution introduced by the RS 4, pushing the design further with a new front bumper and a nested-frame grille design.

The rear is standard RS fare however, with a subtle diffuser flanked by the familiar elliptical exhaust tips.

Speaking with TMR today, Audi Australia's Shaun Cleary confirmed a late 2013 local debut, with pricing and specifications to be revealed closer to launch.
