AUDI A8 S8 AUSTRALIA
The revised A8 line-up kicks off at $195,000 for the 3.0 TDI diesel model, followed by the stretched A8 L at $206,900 and the A8 4.2 TDI at $249,900.
Rustle up another $30,000 however and you can slide into the muscled-up 4.0 litre V8-powered S8 - available now for the first time in the current generation.
The new executive mover gets refreshed styling with ‘Matrix LED’ headlights and new technologies, but prices have also increased by $7000 to $11,900.
And at $279,900, the S8 is also $15,000 more expensive than when the badge was last seen here in the previous-generation range.
Still, Audi Australia expects to achieve around 100 sales across the A8 and S8 line this year, nearly doubling the 51 sold in 2013 and far bettering the 75 sold in 2012.
Powering the entry A8 and stretched A8 L models is a 3.0 litre turbodiesel six-cylinder engine, producing 190kW and 580Nm, the latter available from 1750-2500rpm.
Audi says the regular A8 will hit 100km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the longer and heavier A8 L claims a 6.1 second sprint time.
Fuel consumption is listed at 5.9 l/100km for the A8 3.0TDI and 6.0 l/100km for the stretched A8 L.
The top model in the regular A8 range is the 4.2 TDI, powered by a turbodiesel V8 that produces 283kW (a boost of 25kW over the pre-update model) and a huge 850Nm of torque between 2000 and 2750rpm.
Despite its massive power, the 4.2 litre engine boasts fuel consumption figures of just 7.4 l/100km, and those numbers are reversed to produce a 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds.
Well above the A8 models however is the hero S8, with its twin-turbo 4.0 litre petrol V8 offering a meaty 382kW and 650Nm of torque - the latter between 1700 and 5500rpm.
That marks a 51kW and 110Nm increase over the naturally-aspirated V10 engine that powered its predecessor.
Official fuel consumption is equally impressive, listed at just 9.6 l/100km.
The S8, and all three A8 models, are equipped with Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed tiptronic automatic.
Standard features with the A8 3.0 TDI include 19-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels in front of adaptive air suspension, along with LED headlights, 22-way power adjustable and heated seats up front, power-assisted door closing and an automatic boot lid.
There’s also a glass sunroof, Audi Drive Select, 14-speaker Bose audio, DAB+ digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity and satellite navigation, and woodgrain accents.
The A8 4.2 TDI rides on 20-inch alloys and gets the extra-special Matrix LED headlights, along with digital TV, head-up display, massage function in the front seats, and the quattro sports differential.
Go for the S8 and the wheels are upgraded to 21-inch, and there’s also sports-tuned adaptive air suspension, dynamic steering, electric sun blinds to the rear doors and window, and the ‘S line’ styling pack inside and out.
Safety tech across the range includes two-stage front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for front and rear seats, side curtain airbags, stability control, traction control and electronic diff lock, Lane and Side Assist, Park Assist with 360-degree surround view, and adaptive cruise control.
