Debuting in New York this week, the sedan stablemate to the still-fresh hatch range has been showcased in regular A3 and top-shelf S3 performance guise.
In the range-topping S3, power is delivered by the same 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving the S3 hatch, producing 221kW and 380Nm of torque.
Combined with the quattro all-wheel-drive system, Audi promises a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.9 seconds with the six-speed S tronic transmission.
In manual form, the S3 sedan promises a 5.3 second sprint. Top speed in both versions is electronically limited to 250km/h.
The S3 sedan's power figures fall short of the likely numbers for Mercedes' small CLA 45 AMG (265kW), but the Merc's anticipated sprint time of around 4.7 seconds (nearly matching the A 45 AMG hatch) is almost line-ball with the Audi.
The S3 sedan sits on 25mm-lower suspension than the regular A3, and large 340mm disc brakes sit behind the front wheels.
As with the hatch, the S3 sedan adds unique grille, bumper and intake styling, along with quad exhaust tips at the rear.
In US-market trim, the S3 sedan's standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels (optional 19s shown), full leather trim, three-spoke S steering wheel with mounted shift paddles, and power-adjusted sports seats.
As for the regular A3 sedan, options largely mirror the international features of the A3 hatch. Audi's updated MMI infotainment system is on deck, and the usual range of trim grades are there.
International engine options will include a 111kW 2.0 litre TDI diesel, a 105kW 1.4 litre petrol engine, and a 135kW 1.8 litre TFSI petrol.
Transmission options will include six-speed manual and S tronic dual-clutch automatic units.
The A3 sedan measures 1.8 metres wide, its flared arches making it 11mm wider than the hatch. For a more planted look, the sedan is also 9mm shorter top-to-bottom.
Riding on a 2640mm wheelbase and measuring 4460mm long, the A3 sedan is noteably shorter than the 4703mm A4 sedan, which also rides on a 2808mm wheelbase.
The A3 sedan is also slightly shorter than Mercedes' coupe-like CLA, which rides on a 2700mm wheelbase and and measures 4630mm long.
Audi has confirmed the A3 Sedan will go on sale in Australia in the first quarter of 2014.
