Volvo is wasting no time expanding its small-car line-up. Images out of Europe reveal that a high-riding version of the V40 hatch is on the way.

Spied in the middle of a photo shoot on Norway's west coast, the new crossover - expected to be called V40 Cross Country - was caught this week without a shred of camouflage.

As expected, the new compact SUV will retain the body of the V40 five-door, while adding the usual accoutrements; taller suspension, and unpainted plastic guards for a more rugged look.

Expect the V40's petrol and diesel engines to carry over to the V40 CC, including the headlining 187kW and 360Nm T5 engine, which promises a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds in the regular hatch.

If an Australian debut for the Cross Country is confirmed, expect the crossover to be priced as a rival for Audi's new Q3 and the BMW X1, along with the MINI Countryman.

Watch for more details on the new V40 CC in the coming months, and keep an eye on TMR for news of the V40's local debut, expected later this year or early in 2013.
