Volkswagen's Golf hatch has been named European Car of the Year for a second time, joining the Renault Clio as only the second car to do so.

The new Golf racked up a total of 414 votes in its march to the prize, more than doubling the count of this year's equal runners-up, the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ twins.

Volvo's brand-new V40 hatch finished third with 189 votes, followed by the overseas Ford B-Max (148), the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class (138), Renault's new Clio (128), the Peugeot 208 (120) and the Hyundai i30 (111).
