The latest evolution of Volkswagen's electrified Golf hatch has surfaced, ahead of its unveiling in Geneva next month alongside the new Golf R hot hatch.

While the new R will be all about petrol-powered performance driving, this new Golf-e model forms the next step in Volkswagen's ongoing project to electrify its line-up.

In 2010, Volkswagen committed to a 2013 rollout of an expanded electric and hybrid range, teased at the time by the Golf Blue-e-Motion pilot program.

Full details of the new model are still to be revealed, although it is understood that its electric powertrain will utilise an updated version of the motor systems featured in the previous Blue-e-Motion model.

According to Spanish paper El Mundo, the new Mk7 Golf-e's electric motor will produce around 85kW and 270Nm of torque - identical to the output of the Golf Mk6-based EV.

With power sent to the front wheels only, the Golf-e is expected to offer a 0-100km/h time of just under 12 seconds. Far from a blistering pace, but this is no Tesla

Crucially, the Golf-e will offer the same rear storage capacity as the regular petrol and diesel Golf models, with the 205kg battery pack stored along the floor.
