The NRMA and Monash University Accident Research Centre have released this year's used car safety ratings, with the results showing 57 of the most commonly-crashed used cars have a 5-Star ANCAP score.

It's good news for used car buyers who don't want to compromise on safety.

With increasing numbers of second-hand vehicles now sporting equipment like stability control; traction control; ABS and front, side and curtain airbags, motorists on a budget now have more peace of mind when it comes to safety.

The mid-size category was rated the safest, with 13 cars listed as offering 5-Star safety. Six of those cars also boasted improved safety for non-occupants like pedestrians and cyclists.

"A popular car in the medium category that scored a 'Safe Pick' rating was the Toyota Camry built from 2006 to 2011," said NRMA safety spokesman Jack Haley.

"Second-hand car buyers could pick up a 2006 Camry from about $7,000, making it an affordable and safe vehicle," he continued.

"The small car category has seven vehicles in the top rating group, and six of them are safe picks, including the Holden Cruze and Mazda3, both built from 2006 to 2011."
