Spy photos and leaks have all ensured that buyers waiting for the next RAV4 SUV needn't stretch their minds far in imagining the look of the next-generation model.
Unveiled in Los Angeles today, the all-new 2013 RAV4 brings all of Toyota's latest styling tricks to the table. Sharp hooked lights, a deep-vee grille design and squared-off bumpers, it's all there.
The long tail-lights wrap around the rear quarter and into the tailgate, while a low-cut bumper creates a wide and deep loading aperture.
The new RAV4's engine options will include a trio of four-cylinder units, including a turbodiesel engine that Toyota Australia has confirmed will arrive with the new range early in 2013.
Engine options in the Australian 2013 RAV4 range will include two petrol four-cylinder mills, and a single turbodiesel option.
The petrol engines are familiar, with the duo led by the Camry Altise's 2.5 litre 133kW engine, followed by the Corolla Ultima's 2.0 litre 102kW mill.
The diesel option is a turbocharged common-rail 110kW 2.2 litre unit. Toyota promises fuel consumption figures below 6.0 l/100km in manual form, and CO2 emissions below 150g/km.
All three engines will be mated to six-speed manual transmissions in standard trim.
The 2.2 diesel and 2.5 petrol can also be had with six-speed automatic shifters, while the 2.0 petrol can have a "seven-speed" CVT auto.
The new RAV4's suspension package includes McPherson struts up front and a double-wishbone arrangement at the rear.
Front- and all-wheel-drive variants will be offered, with both offering a Sport mode for sharpened electronic power steering assist and throttle response, transmission mapping and a 'blip' on downshifts.
All-wheel-drive models also feature Dynamic Torque Control, transferring more power to the rear wheels when needed.
As with the new Camry, the 2013 RAV4 makes use of high-strength steels for a stiffer build, including in the roof, rocker sills, floor, engine compartment and door frames.
Features & Dimensions
Internationally, the new RAV4 will launch with a 6.1 inch touchscreen display and reversing camera, and safety features include eight airbags, anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control and a reach/rake adjustable steering wheel.
Other features include daytime running lights, cruise control, dual zone climate control, a powered moonroof and sliding shade, and heated mirrors.
Depending on specification, the new model will be available with 17-inch steel wheels, along with 17- and 18-inch alloys.
The spare tyre has also been relocated under the cargo floor, and the tailgate is now hinged at the top instead of the side - a significant change from RAV4s of decades past.
The new RAV4 measures 4569mm long, 1844mm wide and 1661mm tall. (Only one bodystyle has been announced so far.)
The new RAV4 will go on sale in Australia in the first quarter of 2013. Watch for more details and pricing as the launch date draws nearer.
