Subaru's updated 2013 Liberty is now on sale in Australia, bringing style tweaks, powertrain improvements, new featues and sharpened pricing.

Previewed by the September debut of the high-riding Liberty X sedan, the updated sedan and wagon models get a new front grille and foglight surrounds, along with new wheel designs.

Pricing at the entry end has fallen by $2000 to $32,900 for the 2.5i sedan, and improved fuel economy for the naturally-aspirated 2.5 litre models will boost appeal.

Fuel consumption in the Liberty 2.5i an 2.5i Premium models has fallen from 8.3 to 7.9 l/100km, a 4.8 percent improvement brought by the new FB boxer engine paired with Subaru's Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission.

The changes also mean that power for the 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models has increased from 123 to 127kW, and torque is up from 229 to 235Nm.

Changes to the line-up have seen the manual option dropped from the 2.5i wagon, and the big 3.6 six-cylinder engine is now available only with the Liberty X sedan.

Subaru says it has also improved torque distribution for the Liberty's all-wheel-drive system, with the enhancements benefiting from testing on Australian roads.

Changes to the all-wheel-drive system include revised damper and spring rate settings, while welding and additional support have been added to the cradle frame and sub-frame for improved manoeuvrability.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness is also improved, Subaru says, through the use of a thicker front stabiliser and new bushings.

Feature and styling changes across the line-up include an updated steering wheel design centre console and instrument panel, along with a one-touch lane-change indicator stalk, USB audio connectivity.

There is also a relocated electronic park brake switch, now positioned in the centre console. To make way for the relocated switch, SI-Drive controls in Liberty GT and 3.6X variants have been moved to the steering wheel.

All but the entry-level 2.5i also pick up electro-luminescent gauges with a 3.5-inch colour informtion display. The leather-trimmed Liberty 2.5i variants have picked up satellite navigation.

Subaru's EyeSight collision-avoidance system is now feature in Liberty 2.5i Premium, automatic Liberty GT premium, and the jacked-up Liberty X sedan.

Liberty sales are up 12 percent year-to-date, and Subaru will be looking to its updated Liberty to help combat new models like the 2013 Mazda6 range.
