The all-new 2013 Forester goes on sale in Japan this week, and Subaru has released a bevy of new images to give Australian buyers a preview of what's to come.

The carmaker's local arm has confirmed a first-quarter 2013 debut for Australia, although exact timing and specifications is still to be confirmed.

The new model's styling evolves the look of the current Forester, while picking up new front- and rear-end styling inspired by the Impreza and Liberty.

The theme continues in the cabin, with a dash and overall look that draws on the design of the smaller and still-new Impreza.

Features to be offered with the new Forester will include petrol and diesel engines, auto stop-start for non-turbo petrol models, along with six-speed manual and CVT automatic transmissions (replacing the old four-speed auto).

In Japan, the Forester will get a pair of 2.0 litre petrol boxer engines: the familiar naturally-aspirated 110kW unit, and the other a turbocharged version producing 205kW for the XT model.
