2013 Porsche 911 Targa Spied Testing

A reborn Targa version of the Porsche 911 is the latest variant of the new-generation '991' to be spotted testing in Germany.

Development has clearly entered the evaluation phase, as these two prototypes are wearing very little camouflage.

Dressed here to look like the already-launched convertible model, the new Targa’s visual nod to the original 1967 Targa’s roll hoop can be seen beneath the fabric-appearance matte paint.

Recent generations of 911 (995, 996, and 997) have all featured a retractable class panel that slides beneath the rear window, but this new model looks likely to store its roof panel on top of the rear glass.

A visual hint of this layout is the part lines along the top of the ‘roll hoop’, which likely conceal an outward folding mechanism.

These prototypes appear to be in both Carrera and Carrera S trim, suggesting that the new model will be available in both guises as previously.

All-wheel-drive Targa 4 and Targa 4S models are expected to follow also, with the regular Carrera 4 and 4S models expected before the year’s end.

The production Targa models are expected for an early 2013 launch, in time for the northern hemisphere summer.
