Opel’s hot Corsa OPC has now hit Australian shores, arriving at the same time as its Astra and Insignia OPC stablemates - but you can't have one until April.

The latest addition to the light hot-hatch segment sees the regular Corsa’s 1.4 litre engine gain 200cc and a turbocharger, along with comprehensive tweaks to rival the likes of VW’s Polo GTI.

Available in three door-only, the Corsa OPC’s list price of $28,990 joins a growing list of Australian-market performance options for under $30,000.

Mechanical Package

At the heart of the Corsa OPC sits a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 141kW at 5850RPM, and 230Nm between 1980-5800RPM

An overboost function liberates a further 30Nm during hard acceleration, and Opel claims 0-100km/h acceleration in 7.2 seconds, 80-120km/h in 6.7 seconds, with a top speed of 225km/h.

A six-speed manual is the sole transmission choice, contributing to a combined fuel consumption of is 7.5l/100km for the 1280kg Corsa OPC.

Beneath the Corsa OPC sits a Nürburgring-honed suspension tune; the result of collaboration with Lotus Engineering.

This set-up sits 15mm lower than standard, with OPC-specific springs and damper tuning, and revised rear-end geometry reduces bodyroll by a claimed 25 percent.

The OPC comes standard with 17 inch wheels wrapped in 215/45R17 tyres, with a 308mm front/264mm rear OPC-specific braking package, while the electro-hydraulic steering varies its ratio between 11.8:1 and 13.3:1 according to speed and inputs.

Visually, the OPC is differentiated from others in the Corsa range by aggressive front and rear fascias, centrally-mounted exhaust, side-skirts, roof spoiler, and triangle-motif wing mirrors.

Inside, the OPC features unique door-sills, red-needled instruments, flat-bottomed leather steering wheel with stitched 12 o’clock position, leather gearknob, aluminium pedals, and gloss-black and shadow chrome centre stack detailing.

Front seating is thanks to fixed-headrest Recaro units, and retain six-way adjustment on the driver’s side and slots to allow the fitment of four-point racing harnesses.

These are trimmed in cloth and leatherette, with silver stitching to match the shadow chrome highlights used elsewhere.

Convenience features include cruise and climate control, steering wheel audio controls, bluetooth telephony, rear parking sensors, auto headlamps, wipers, and rear-view mirror dimming, seven speaker audio with iPod, USB, and 3.5mm connectivity.

The Corsa OPC’s colour choices are limited to Casablanca White, Magma Red, Flaming Yellow, Carbon Flash Black, and OPC-specific Arden Blue.

All colours aside from white are considered a premium option, and cost a further $595.

Also optional are 18 inch alloy wheels for a further $1000, with wider 225/35R18 tyres.

Like all Opel models, the Corsa OPC is included in Opel Australia’s Opel Service Plus capped price servicing scheme, with all scheduled services within the first three years or 45,000km capped at $299.

One novel OPC option will be the unique PowerApp application for Apple iPhone and iPad users.

When combined with an optional dealer-fitted smartphone controller, the (99 cents from Apple’s Australian App Store) OPC PowerApp will enable drivers to view details such as boost pressure, throttle position, lateral acceleration or engine torque in real time on their Apple device.

The Corsa OPC carries a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with front, side and curtain airbags joined by traction and stability control, active front headrests and seatbelt pretensioners, and collapsible pedals.
