Update - June 15, 2012: The front-end update of the 2013 Astra range has been revealed. We've updated this article to include the face of the new Astra Sedan, previously hidden.

Opel has pulled the wraps from its new Astra Sedan, which will join the German brand's European line-up this year.

Filling out the Astra range alongside the existing three- and five-door Hatches and the Tourer wagon, along with the new convertible, the Sedan will make its world debut at August's Moscow Auto Salon.

For now, GM's European brand has revealed only the rear of the Sedan, leaving the recently-spied Astra front-end update for the car's official unveiling.

In Europe, the Astra Sedan will be offered with a full seven engines: four petrol engines ranging in power from 74 to 132kW, and three diesels ranging from 70 to 96kW.

Two of the diesel models will be based on the same 1.7 CDTi ecoFLEX engine, equipped with a start/stop system and other fuel-saving technologies to offer claimed fuel consumption figures as low as 3.7 l/100km.

In 2013, another petrol engine will join the range: GM's new turbocharged 1.6 litre SIDI ECOTEC four-cylinder petrol engine.

Riding on the same 2685mm wheelbase as the five-door hatch, Opel promises a rear cargo area that offers 470 litres with the rear seats up - 90 more than the five-door - expanding to 1010 litres with the seats laid flat.

On the styling front, the Astra Sedan will feature the same front-end look as its five-door sibling, along with a long sporting roofline and an integrated spoiler in the boot lid.

Australia

With the Astra Sedan still to make its world debut, it is unclear at this stage if we can expect to see it in Australia.

If the Sedan does join the five- and three-door Astra hatches when they debut later this year, it will take on the likes of the new Ford Focus sedan and the Mazda3 sedan.

Speaking with TMR today, Opel Australia's Michelle Lang said that the German carmaker's local arm will focus on the Astra hatch and wagon variants, "at least initially".
