Nissan's all-new Altima sedan has reared its head (and everything else) online today, just hours out from its New York Auto Show debut this week.

These new images and details offer the first polished look at the car that is likely to replace the Maxima in the Australian market.

A racing version of the Altima's design will also represent the Nissan brand when the Japanese carmaker enters Australia's V8 Supercar Championship in 2013.

In its US-market form, the new fifth-generation Altima will be available with two petrol engines, starting with Nissan's updated 135kW/244Nm QR25 four-cylinder engine.

The engine duo is topped by the familiar 3.5 litre VQ35DE engine, producing 200kW and 350Nm in 2013 Altima form. (The same engine delivers 185kW and 326Nm in the Australian-delivered Maxima.)

On the American combined fuel cycle test, Nissan expects to achieve fuel consumption figures of 7.5 l/100km for the 2.5 litre engine, and 9.4 l/100km for the 3.5 litre.

In Australia, the VQ25-equipped Maxima lists 9.5 l/100km, and the VQ35-equipped car manages 10.2 l/100km.

Both engines will be paired with Nissan's Xtronic CVT automatic transmission, which has been treated to an upgrade that brings new control logic and wider gear ratio coverage.

As with the previous Altima and the local Maxima, power is sent to the front wheels.

How does the new Altima compare to Australia's Maxima in size? Both cars ride on the same 2775mm wheelbase, but the Altima has a 35mm wider track.

Inside, Nissan promises more a more upmarket feel with higher-quality materials and more electronics.

Features in the cabin will include Bluetooth streaming audio, NissanConnect phone connectivity with Hands-Free Messaging Assistant, Advanced Drive-Assist Display.

Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant, Bose premium audio with nine speakers and an optional moonroof will also feature, along with automatic headlights, air-con microfilter, tyre-pressure monitoring system and Nissan Intelligent Key remote central locking.

Depending on the variant, other features will include dual-zone climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather upholstery, 17 and 18-inch aluminium-alloy wheels, rearview reversing monitor, heated external mirrors and LED taillights.

Safety features will include blindspot warning, lane departure warning, moving object detection, along with dual stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor, front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags, and roof-mounted curtain supplemental side-impact air bags for front-and rear-seat occupant head protection.

Keep an eye out for Australian details to surface in the coming months.
