Mitsubishi's next-generation Outlander has made its debut at the Australian International Motor Show and will go on sale on November 18.

The new Outlander will go into battle against the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester in the mid-size SUV segment.

The range starts at $28,990 for the five-speed manual-equipped 2.0 litre petrol 2WD ES, through to the $45,490 Aspire 2.2 litre 6-speed automatic diesel.

The ES 4WD 2.4 litre CVT is the most affordable 4WD Outlander at $33,990.

Mechanical Package

The Outlander is offered in one five-door body style and with three engines - two petrol and one diesel.

A 2.2 litre turbo-charged, MIVEC four cylinder, the diesel is available on the 4WD LS and Aspire and is available only with a six-speed automatic.

The Japanese carmaker is making much of the new diesel's green credentials, listing a claimed 5.8 l/100km and 153g/km of CO2.

The 2.0 litre petrol is available with a five speed manual or CVT. In manual guise, the 2.0 litre manages 7.0 l/100km and 6.6 l/100km with the CVT.

A 2.4 litre is also available on the 4WD ES and Aspire mated to the CVT, with a claimed fuel figure of 7.5 l/100km.

Mitsubishi says the new Outlander's lighter body-weight of 1610kg and improved aerodynamics have helped improve fuel economy across the range.

Towing capacity for the petrol is 1600kg while the diesel ups the ante to 2000kg.

The Outlander's ECO Drive informs the driver when they are driving at maximum efficiency. Switching to ECO mode also sets the car to save energy, tweaking the air-conditioning and four-wheel drive systems.

Inside the new Outlander, Bluetooth and voice control is standard across the range, as is climate control air-conditioning and cruise control. Sure to appeal to family buyers is that the cabin in the LS and Aspire can be configured for five, six or seven seats.

On the safety front, active stability control, ABS and EBD, reverse parking sensors and hill start assist are also standard.

And all Outlanders are fitted with seven airbags, including knee bags.

Outlander ES

The ES comes with a single CD audio system with steering wheel controls, leather steering wheel and shifter.

The entry-level Outlander rolls on 16-inch steel wheels and has auto-folding mirrors, has five seats and two-wheel drive.

Four-wheel drive is available on the ES 2.4 litre.

Outlander LS

The LS adds the third row of seats for a total of seven, 16-inch alloys, front fog lamps, dual zone climate control and a 6.1-inch LCD display for the audio system.

The LS also gains a rear parking camera and four-wheel drive.

Outlander Aspire

The Aspire adds 18-inch wheels, chrome accents on the door handles inside and out, rain sensing wipers, keyless start, leather interior and heated front seats.

The Premium Pack ($5500), only available on the Aspire trim, level adds Forward Collision Mitigation System (FCS) which automatically brakes the car if the sensors detect an obstacle in its path.

Active Cruise Control is also part of the Premium option, replacing the traditional cruise control.

On top of the extra safety features, the Premium Pack also adds a 7-inch touch screen and a Rockford Fosgate Premium nine-speaker sound system.
