Shown here in its final production form, the new Outlander's styling will remain virtually unchanged from its concept progenitor, with only minor elements not carried over to the production model.
The vertical LED strips in the concept's front bumper have disappeared, while the grille, headlights and front bumper have all been massaged into a simpler form.
Images of the new SUV's interior have not been released, although Mitsubishi promises an "uncluttered quality," with padded dash and doors, soft-touch surfaces, silver and gloss-black highlights and a new multi-function steering wheel design.
The new Outlander will get a downsizing under the bonnet, with the current model's 3.0 litre and 2.4 litre mills (in Australia) swapped for a 2.0 litre petrol engine and a 2.2 litre diesel, again in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations.
A plug-in electric hybrid will also feature in the new Outlander line-up, matching the 2.0 litre petrol engine to an electric motor at each axle.
Previewed by the two PX-MiEV concepts, Mitsubishi says the plug-in hybrid will offer a driving range over 800 kilometres and list carbon emissions below 50g/km.
The new Outlander will hit European markets toward the middle of 2012, with an Australian debut set for later this year or early in 2013.
