MINI’s high-riding Paceman hatch has arrived on our shores this week, just five months after its worldwide debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

The Paceman is the seventh bodystyle to join MINI’s current lineup, and is defined by MINI as a ‘Sports Activity Coupe’.

Sharing its platform and 2596mm wheelbase with the five-door Countryman SUV, the Paceman features a unique tapered roofline and rear-end styling, and more pronounced hips on the rear quarters.

Available in Cooper and turbocharged Cooper S models, the Paceman also offeres a choice of manual or automatic transmissions.

Priced from $35,900 for the entry Cooper Paceman manual, and topping out at $46,450 for the Cooper S Paceman auto, the Paceman undercuts comparable all-wheel drive Countryman models significantly.

Mechanical Package

The Paceman is equipped with the 1.6 litre petrol four used by other MINI models, in 90kW/160Nm naturally aspirated guise for the Cooper Paceman, and 135kW/240Nm in the Cooper S Paceman.

Like other Cooper S models, the turbo Paceman features an overboost function that briefly liberates a further 20Nm between 1700-4500rpm.

Tied to either a six-speed manual or optional six-speed auto, the Cooper S Paceman uses its slight weight advantage over the all-wheel drive Cooper S Countryman to drop 0.1 seconds from its claimed 0-100km/h figures - now 7.5 seconds for the manual and 7.8 for the auto.

The naturally aspirated Cooper Paceman claims a 10.4 second figure in manual guise, and 11.5 seconds for the automatic.

Combined fuel consumption is 6.5l/100km for the manual Cooper Paceman, and 7.6l/100km for the auto.

The hotter Cooper S Paceman records near identical figures, with 6.6l/100km for the manual, and 7.5l/100km for the auto.

Standard on the cooper S Paceman is Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which expands on the standard traction control system by offering a low-traction mode and electronic diff lock function.

The Cooper S Paceman also comes with a button-actuated Sport mode, which activates more aggressive steering and throttle settings and shift pattern on automatic models.

Both DTC and Sport mode are $300 options on the Cooper Paceman.

Suspension is by MacPherson struts up front, and a multilink setup in the rear, and the Paceman rides 10mm lower than the Countryman as standard - though the higher setup remains a no-cost option.

Front brakes are 294mm discs on Cooper Paceman and 307mm on Cooper S Paceman, while both models use 280mm discs on the rear.

On the inside, the Paceman’s interior design is largely shared with the Countryman, and benefits from the same subtle updates introduced on the Countryman earlier this year - such as door-mounted power window switches.

Unlike the Countryman, all Pacemans use a four-seat layout, with individual buckets in the rear split by a Centre Rail console. A full length Centre Rail console is a no-cost option on both models.

The more style-focused Paceman also loses some cargo space to the Countryman, with 330 litres seats-up, and 1080 litres with the seats folded.

These figures are 20 litres and 90 litres less than the Countryman respectively, and ISOFIX child seat anchorage points are retained.

Equipment-wise, all Pacemans come with standard air conditioning, leather multifunction steering wheel, CD audio with 3.5mm and USB connectivity, and Bluetooth telephony.

The MINI Cooper Paceman features 16 inch five-spoke alloys, front and rear fog lights, automatic headlights and wipers, and chrome interior detailing.

Differentiating the MINI Cooper S Paceman are 17 inch five-hole alloys, clear indicator lenses and stainless steel trim for the pedals and driver’s footrest.

Both models are trimmed in Diagonal Track cloth upholstery as standard, but a Hot Cross cloth/leather combination, Gravity leather, or top-tier Lounge leather are optional.

Like other MINI models, a variety of upholstery colours, interior surfaces, and trim details are also available for those wishing to personalise their Paceman.

Further options include heated seats, climate control, glass sunroof, bi-xenon adaptive headlights with tinted housings, self-dimming rear-view and exterior mirrors, and parking sensors.

Satnav, voice control, digital radio, and a 10 speaker harman/kardon audio system are also available at extra cost.

Wheel options include 18 and 19 inch designs for both Cooper Paceman and Cooper S Paceman.

Both Paceman models are available in eight different exterior colours and most are available with contrasting black or white roof and mirror caps at no extra cost.

All Paceman’s are fitted with stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, and hill-start assist.

On the inside, front, side, and curtain airbags cover both front and rear seats, while front positions include belt tensioners and belt force limiters.
