2013 MINI Cooper Five-door Spied

The look of MINI's new third-generation Cooper range might prove evolutionary, but the carmaker has at least one new trick planned: rear passenger doors. 

Unlike the current Clubman model, which carries wagon styling and a rear door on only one side of the car, this new bodystyle will be a proper five-door hatch. 

While it remains to be seen if this model will continue the Clubman name, it is clear from these shots that the five-door will ride on a slightly longer wheelbase than its three-door sibling.

The introduction of a conventional five-door model should help to boost MINI sales, broadening the line-up's appeal for those shopping it against the Audi A1 and similar rivals. 

The model shown here also reveals that the sports-focused S variant will be offered in three- and five-door form, with the three-door already spied in past weeks. 

The new Cooper S is expected to continue to use a turbocharger for its performance boost, but this new model looks likely to do away with the bonnet scoop.

Earlier photos also offer a look at the new Cooper's interior, which points to a continuation of previous MINI retro shapes, but with more contemporary details and switchgear.

The new MINI Cooper and Cooper S are expected to be the first vehicles based on the BMW Group’s new UKL1 platform, expected to underpin the next generation of MINI derivatives and a host of BMW models.

Both Cooper models are expected to be unveiled before the end of the year, before going on sale in early 2013.
