The refreshed 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has surfaced online this morning, just hours out from its official unveiling to the motoring press.

There is little here that spy shots and teaser clips have not revealed, but it is clear that the E-Class has been given an extensive makeover that brings it in-line with Merc's newer models.

The standout change is to the E's headlights. Reverting to a one-piece design, the lights nonetheless retain a connection to the pre-facelift model through the use of split LED light ribbons around each globe.

A larger and more prominent grille is also featured, along with a new bumper and a curvaceous redesign for the front bumper.

Changes to the E-Class' sheet metal reveal new character lines in the car's profile, the large 'pontoon' style rear guards making way for a softer and smoothed-out appearance.

Changes to the rear end are more subtle, with the tail-lights maintaining their existing shape but gaining redesigned internals. There is also a new chrome garnish style, and a subtly updated bumper with new exhaust tips.

The theme continues in the cabin, with a new CLS-inspired look that includes a three-ring instrument cluster and a large centre clock, along with new switch layouts and new trim options.

The official unveiling of the new E-Class is not far away; keep an eye on TMR for all the details.
