Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off petrol and diesel BlueEfficiency Editions of its A-Class small hatch. Among them is a diesel variant touted as the most fuel-efficient model ever to wear the three-pointed star.
The A 180 CDI BlueEfficiency Edition consumes just 3.6l/100km and emits 92g/km of CO2 on the European cycle, using a Renault-sourced 80kW 1.5 litre turbodiesel engine and six-speed manual transmission.
In petrol form, the 90kW 1.6 litre A 180 BlueEfficiency uses 5.2l/100km and produces 120g/km - also tied to a six-speed manual transmission.
These BlueEfficiency models benefit from efficiency-focused modifications like taller gearing and revised alternator management, along with air-cheating 15mm lower suspension and grill and undercarriage fairings.
Both engines will be available as regular A 180 models, but the BlueEfficiency treatment liberates a claimed 0.2l/100km improvement for the diesel model, and 0.3l/100km for the petrol.
