Visitors to this week's New York Auto Show can feast their eyes on Mazda's low-slung Takeri concept, but it's Paris in September that will play host to the brand-new Mazda6 sedan.

Spied testing recently in the current model's body, the all-new Mazda6  is expected to adopt the styling themes of the Takeri - itself an evolution of the earlier Shinari concept.

Like the new CX-5 compact SUV and the Minagi concept before it, the new Mazda6 will do away with the long curves and smiling face of the brand's current line-up, replaced with hard corners and razor-sharp highlights.

A coupe version of the new Mazda6 has been rumoured, and while Mazda itself has yet to confirm plans for a sporty two-door 6, the lines of the Takeri and Shinari concepts would lend themselves well to such a product.

Wagon and hatch versions will likely also appear - and perhaps even a new MPS variant.

Mazda has confirmed that the platform underpinning the new CX-5 will form the basis of the new Mazda6, and even the smaller Mazda3, moving the brand's core models away from technology shared with US carmaker Ford.

This will also be the first time that the Mazda3 and Mazda6 will use the same platform.

Technologies in the new Mazda6 will include the carmaker's new SkyActiv engines, transmissions and lightweight construction techniques, along with a new i-ELOOP capacitor-based kinetic energy regenerative braking system.
